What an invoice must include in the EU

Article 226 of the EU VAT Directive sets the details a VAT invoice needs. Dunlio’s templates have a field for each one.

  • The date of issue and a unique, sequential invoice number
  • Your full name, address and VAT identification number
  • Your client’s full name and address, plus their VAT number for reverse charge
  • The quantity and nature of the goods or the extent and nature of the services
  • The date of supply, if it differs from the invoice date
  • The net amount per VAT rate, the unit price and any discounts
  • The VAT rate and the VAT amount, or the reason no VAT is charged
  • A note such as “Reverse charge” or the exemption that applies

General information, not tax advice. National rules add details, for example a company registration number.

Questions about the invoice templates

Are the invoice templates free?
Yes. You can create, download and send invoices on the free plan. Paid plans add automatic reminders and more active invoices.
Can I add my logo and colors?
Yes. Upload your logo, choose one of four designs and pick an accent color. Every new invoice uses them.
Does it handle VAT and reverse charge?
Yes. Each line has its own VAT rate, totals are shown per rate, and you can mark an invoice as reverse charge or VAT exempt so the right note is printed.
Can I send the invoice by email?
Yes. Dunlio emails the invoice to your client with the PDF attached, and the same PDF can go with later reminders.
Is a PDF invoice legally valid?
In most countries, yes, if it contains the required details. Some countries require structured e-invoices for certain business clients, for example Italy and Poland. Check your local rules.
